The Providence has Power Gear Electric jacks and worked perfectly for 5 years on the road. The left rear jack became intermittent during our trip to the Canadian Maritimes last year and finally quit completely November 2013 when retracting them at the end of our stay in Navarre, FL. Fortunately, the jack quit in a fully retracted position. This is long but important to learn about many issues from service quality to service options as well as Power Gear Electric Jacks on motorhomes.

Background

jack-motor.jpgThe Power Gear system consists of an automatic level controller, 4 all electric jacks with motor and brake. The controller senses the position of the jack full up or full down with a magnet embedded in the jack staff. This is to stop extension at its maximum and stop retraction when full up by applying a brake attached to the motor.

When a jack fails it is most likely (~98% of the time) caused by a bad brake, it gets corroded and finally just locks up. Why corrosion? Because the brake is mounted on the bottom of the motor and covered with a rubber boot. Mounted directly behind the rear wheels, it is subject to all kinds of dirt, debris and WATER when travelling in wet conditions. If the top of the boot is not sealed, it will leak water which eventually corrodes the metal parts in the brake and it locks up. The photo on the right shows the motor (yellow) and brake (black boot over the break at the bottom).

FuseMaster switch.jpgI recently replaced my Roadmaster Falcon 2 Towbar and ran across a product they introduced some time ago called FuseMaster. What is it you ask?

It replaces the fuse you must pull to tow with a switich. Here are the details: FuseMaster by Roadmaster.

We tow a Sturn Vue and the last procedure is to pull the Ignition Fuse from the passenger side fuse box. Now, no more pulling the fuse. We simply set the switch to "Tow" and we are done.

Easy to install and it works. Buy it on-line at American RV Company. Be sure to check the Fit List and this RoadMaster Technical Bulletin to deetermine model for your tow vehicle.

Parmesan Crusted Chicken Drumsticks

parmesan-chicken.jpgThis is very inexpensive, easy to prepare and simply delicious!! We like to use drumsticks but any part of the chicken would be just as good. Here's the secret recipe (ok, not so secret):

Parmesan Crusted Chicken

Ingredients

  • 12 chicken drumsticks
  • 2 cups grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Broiled Salmon in less than 15 minutes

broiled-salmon.jpgOne of the easiest and wonderful dinners is broiled Salmon. I use Atantic Salmon because it is milder and plentiful. Suggestion for two people:

Ingredients:

  • About 1 pound Atlantic Salmon cut into two pieces. Be sure both pieces are about the same thickness for consistency.
  • Olive oil
  • Any garlic based spice (I use SusieQ's from Sanata Maria).
  • Old Bay Seasoning

Verizon 4G MiFi Finally Stable in a 3G Area

I upgraded the 3G MiFi device last August to the 4G model and it was totally unreliable in a 3G network. I probaly have over a dozen calls to tech support with no luck getting it fixed. It was even replaced once, Simm card replaced and firmware upgraded.

Carrots, Eggs or Coffee?

You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again...

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans.. She let them sit and boil; without saying A word.

Kool-Aid

Image via Wikipedia

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes. We were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads. As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes. Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Portable Water Softener: Buying Tips

The On The Go portable water softener we purchased over a year ago is doing its job nicely (see this entry: A portable Water Softener ...). Here's a follow up on our experience and some helpful tips:

1) Interested in purchasing a softener? Go to the RV Water Filter Store; a dealer offering different brands and accessories. Rick Dahl is a very knowledgeable owner and available to answer questions over the phone. Also check out prices at On The Go Portable Softeners.

Panorama of the Jacksonville city skyline from...

Image via Wikipedia

A three day stay very close to Jacksonville on our way to Orlando. Woodalls rated 5 W's and I might agree if it wasn't located right on the landing path of the Jacsonville International Airport. Otherwise, nicely laid out with 70 foot level, concrete pads. Sites are 40 feet wide so we have a little more space than usual.

Standard price of $42/night is OK for the quality. They also take Good Sam as well as Passport America at 50% off per night. Were members so $21/night is a real bargain! http://www.pecanparkrvresort.com/index.php

Savannah Oaks RV Resort

Image of Savannah, Georgia

Stayed here when visiting Savannah because it was the closest to the city (about 15 miles) and Woodalls rated it 3 W's, the highest in the area. It is one W too high and surely not a "resort." Location is convenient but facilities are old, not well maintained, sites not level and average price. Staff was friendly. Nice store with a gas staion which is unusual.

BTW, website is awful http://www.savannahoaks.net/

Otherwise, Savannah is a great city to visit. Little known fact: Port has the highest volume of shipping in North America.

Where to Domicile if Full Time RV'ing?

us-map.gifThis is an important question for RV full timers and requires some research. There are several factors to consider:

  • State income tax
  • Personal property tax
  • New vehicle sales tax
  • Insurance rates

  • Driver's license requirements
  • Vehicle inspection requirements
  • Property tax (if you are going to own real property in the state you call home)
  • Mail service membership fee

Headlight Restoration Product Really Works!

After three years traveling the country full time in the Providence, the headlights were looking dim and cloudy. I purchased the Mothers PowerBall 4Lights Headlight Restoration All-In-One kit at a local auto parts store. I had high hopes that it was going to work but was cautiously optimistic.

Just got through using it and am delighted! Here's a before and after shot (click image for large view):

Leaving St Paul, MN this morning. Next stop: Madison, WI to visit the capitol; home to major public employee union protests a few months ago. Should be interesting.

Visited St Paul and was extremely impressed. City is very clean and beautiful. Toured the capitol; it is the most grand of all the capitals we have visited so far. Incredible!

Another landmark in the city is the Cathedral of St. Paul. A magnificent structure comparable to those in Europe, just not nearly as old.

Verizon 4G MiFi

verizon-4g-wifi.jpgUpgraded to 4G MiFi when we were in the Denver area a week ago. We have not been in 4G coverage until now; Sioux Falls, SD. I must say the speed difference is incredible. So far, the upgrade was a smart decision.

The only thing I have noticed is the battery life is not very long. But, we keep it plugged into the charger so it is not a big negative. I'll have to time it when I get a chance.

Overall, my experience with Verizon Broadband coverage around the nation is very positive.

I just replaced all the tires on our Saturn Vue with Toyo from Les Schwab when we were in Washington just two months ago. Nothing wrong with the Toyo, they have a great reputation as a premium tire. Here's my predicament:

Oregon's premier wine country RV park

2011 05 03 Olde Stone Village 001 x800.JPGIt's April, 2011 traveling up the Pacific Coast and detoured into the Willamette Valley; Oregon's premier wine country. We were pleasantly surprised to find Olde Stone Village, a wonderful RV park in McMinnville, Oregon. Just had to add it to Best of the Best.

Meticulously well kept, nice large sites, concrete pads, great utilities with soft, clean water and priced reasonably; $31/night daily, $175 weekly and $415 monthly during the peak summer months. And, 10% off daily rates for Good Sam.
